Welcome to our Home Tour Series. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be walking you through our current home to show you how we’ve created a cohesive design on a budget. Originally, I thought that it might be better to do our home tour after our move. However, I decided, “why not do 2 home tours?” So, you’ll get to tour our current home and our new home. This way, you’ll see how we repurpose our furniture and decorations once we’re in our new space.
Scott and I have been renting this house since October of last week. We had been looking for a place to move into together for a couple of weeks and one day, I had some extra time and decided to search for houses on Craigslist. This house popped up and I IMMEDIATELY fell in love with it! It had so much character and I’m totally a sucker for spaces with character!
I called AND texted the owner and told her that we really wanted to see the house ASAP. Long story short, we saw the house that week, filled out the rental application and moved in a few weeks later.
The house was built in the late 1800s and has a lot of original features. And, although we’ve found our fair share of “cons” to living in an older home, I’m still as in love with this house as the first day I saw it.
The entrance to our home leads right into the sunroom. We wanted to create a space that that was inviting and visually interesting. As you’ve probably guessed from the color palette in our blog and the colors in the sunroom, I love greens, teals, and purples…especially together.
We were on a pretty tight budget for this design but that didn’t scare me! Some of my favorite places for budget decorating are Ross, TJ Max, Marshalls and Home Goods. The down side to these places is that you have to search pretty hard for the perfect pieces. But the upside is that you can find AMAZING deals!
The tiled table in this picture is from Ross and was on clearance for about $20! The chairs are also from Ross and were $99 each (I’m estimating because I bought them over a year ago and don’t remember the exact price).
The dark purple pillow is from Pier 1 Imports. I found it on their website and was able to use a 30% off coupon for it plus choose “pick up in store” during check out. I got it the very night I ordered it online plus, no shipping charges! Score!!
This storage ottoman is one of my favorite pieces because it’s kind of a DIY project. Before Scott and I moved in together, he had purchased two orange ottomans from Amazon. Honestly, they were VERY orange and not the best quality. I headed to Jo Ann Fabric and found this beautiful plum colored fabric with cool wine themed stamps on it. Reupholstering the ottoman was easy and just required some spray on fabric glue.
The pieces on the bookcase (Purchased from Ikea and a FANTASTIC investment!) are from all walks of my life. The 4 pictured above are some of my personal favorites. Especially the statue that we placed on the brass serving tray (which has been in Scott’s family for decades). There was a local art gallery that I passed every day while walking to my apartment and I would see that statue in the window every time. I finally went in to find out how much it cost and, surprisingly, it was really budget friendly (only $40!). While the other pieces look old and full of character, they’re actually all purchases from Ross or TJ Max. The clock was under $10!
Our sunroom has become a great place to sip a cup of coffee, read a book, or watch our neighbors go by.
I hope you enjoyed this tour. Come join me on Thursday as I show you around our living room and give you some more great ideas for decorating on a budget.
